Everett Justus Adams

Everett Justus Adams, 89, of Hazen died Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock.  He was born in Hazen on June 28, 1924, the son of Everett and Laura Faupel Adams.

Everett was a 3rd Class Quartermaster Navy veteran on a LST 268.  He saw action in five battles in the South Pacific.  He was a retired farmer and a member of the Family Christian Fellowship Church in Hazen.

Everett is survived by Helen Adams of Sheridan, the mother of his three children; one son, Chip Adams and wife, Sharon of Hazen and two daughters, Cheryl Vickers of Hazen and Cindy Eagle and husband, David of Jonesboro; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Family Christian Fellowship Church in Hazen.  A private family burial will follow the service at the Hazen Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.

Conley E. House

Conley House, 87, of Austin, TX died Jan. 17, 2014, with his family at his side. He was born Jan. 6, 1927 in Hazen, AR to the late John and Cecil House. He graduated from Hazen High School, Alabama School of Technology and Draughton’s School of Business and Real Estate. He was married to June Edmondson House and they have one daughter, Becky.

Prior to moving to Austin in 2010 to be closer to his daughter and grandsons, Conley was a civic leader and devoted volunteer. He was president of the Hazen Chamber of Commerce for three terms. He served on the Hazen City Council for two terms and the Prairie County Equalization Board and the Criminal Detention Facilities Review Committee for Prairie and White Counties. He was also president of the Hazen Kiwanis Club.

For six years, he was a salesman and manager for Snap-On Tools, winning its coveted “Salesman of the Year” award his first year. With the exception of these six years, he was a small business owner and operated a service station, a wholesale oil company, a supermarket, a small manufacturing company and a hardware store.

Conley was an active member of First Baptist Church until his move to Texas. As a young man, he was Sunday School superintendant. He was also a deacon, deacon chairman and a Sunday School teacher for decades.

His hobbies were story-telling and professional speaking…he was very serious about being funny as a humorist. He was a member of the National Speakers Association and a charter member of the Arkansas Speakers Association. He was also a Toastmaster.

Conley is survived by his wife, June, daughter, Becky Dewan, son-in-law, Raman Dewan, sister, Carolyn House Benafield, three grandsons, Remington, Richmond and Raleigh Dewan, niece, Julie Benafield, and great-niece Melissa Vance.

Visitation will be 5-7 pm Friday at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen. A memorial service will be at 10:30 am Saturday at First Baptist Church, Hazen with burial at Carlisle Cemetery.

Donald E. Holmes

Donald E. Holmes, 69, of Hazen, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014.  He was preceded in death by his parents James and Hazel Holmes and granddaughter Emilee Gracen Holmes.

He is survived by his wife Betty Rose Holmes; two sons Greg Holmes and wife Freda of Hazen and Justin Homes and wife Amanda of Paris, Texas; grandchildren Caroline and James of Hazen, Emilee, Rachel, Emma and Anna of Paris, Texas; brothers Freddie Holmes and wife Bette of Little Rock, and Gayle Holmes and wife Annetta of Sherwood; sister Mattie Holmes Foster and husband Joe of Sherwood  and several nieces and nephews.

Donnie was a graduate of Hazen High School, a retired farmer, a life long member of the Center Point Missionary Baptist church and served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He served in the Arkansas National Guard, was a member of the Center Point Cemetery Committee, and member and past president of the Hazen School Board.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen.  Funeral services will be Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 2:00 P. M. at the Center Point Missionary Baptist Church north of Hazen.  Burial will be in the Center Point Cemetery under the direction of Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen.  Family requests in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Center Point Missionary Baptist Church.
