Leta PerryLeta Pearl Fisher Perry, age 86, of Hazen was born on August 12, 1928, and went to her eternal home in Heaven on August 29, 2014. Let was born to Harrison and Mary Goacher Fisher and was raised by her mother and stepfather George Vail, Sr., after Harrison’s untimely passing. She was preceeded in death by her parents and husband, Rev. Charlie Perry, with whom she had been married for 62 years prior to his passing in 2009, and also by her brothers Gene Vail and George Vail, Jr. “Mamaw” Leta is survived by her sons Danny (Delores) Perry or Ward, Dale (Sara) Perry of Hazen, and Albert Perry of Hazen; grandchildren David Perry, Matt (Wendy) Perry, and Emily (Scott) White; great-grandchildren Kade, Mary Katherine, Mattie and Kami Perry, and Emma White; step-grandchildren Tania (Huey) Bush and Jamie (Annette) Felts; step-great-grandchildren Kayla (James) Riley, Arial (Kelly) Moore, and Colton Felt; step-great-great-grandchildren Korlan Riley and Kaleb Moore. She is also survived by her sister Frances White of Stuttgart, brother Edward (Helen) Vail of Stuttgart, sisters-in-law Margie Vail of Stuttgart, Lucille Vail of Hazen, and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own children.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 at Westbrook Funeral Home on Sunday evening. The funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church followed by a burial service at Center Point Cemetery.

Charles Edwin (Little Pete) Newsom

Charles Edwin (Little Pete) Newsom, age 76 of De Valls Bluff, died Monday, August 25, 2014 at the V.A. Medical Center in Little Rock. Charley was a farmer, enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin”Pete” and Emma Newsom and a brother, Forest Mathis.

“Little Pete” is survived by two daughters, Terri Newsom of Romance, Arkansas and Lisa Austin of Grand Forks, North Dakota; one son, Chuck Newsom of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three grandchildren; Wesley Austin, Robby Newsom, and Lauren Neal and a sister, Becky Isbell of Hazen, Arkansas.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 P.M., Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church in Hazen. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 to 3:00 prior to the service.

Sarah Welty Betzner

Sarah Welty Betzner, 90, of Hazen, Arkansas, passed away on August 16, 2014.  She was the daughter of the late Jesse A. and Sarah Elizabeth Welty of DeValls Bluff, Arkansas.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Frank N. Welty and sister, Elizabeth Welty Perry.  She is survived by two sons, William Brooks Betzner, Jr. of Hazen and Frank Betzner (Lynne) of Little Rock, a neice, Suzann Welty Barr (John), and three grandchildren, Sarah Lynne Betzner, William James Betzner and Michael Brooks Sowell.

Sarah was raised in DeValls Bluff and lived most of her life in Hazen, Arkansas.  She was family and community minded and participated in several organizations helped in several activities in the community.   She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Hazen, serving as treasurer for a number of years.  She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and looked forward to those events.

She retired from the State of Arkansas Social Services Division and enjoyed many of her remaining retirement years traveling with friends and going to Razorback games.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Hazen or to Christ Lutheran School in Little Rock.

Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.M., Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen. Graveside services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Oakland Cemetery in De Valls Bluff.

Kathleen Akins Hall

Kathleen Akins Hall, 83, of Hazen departed this life on August 13, 2014 at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. 

She was born in Prairie County on October 3, 1930 to Homer and Mildred Akins of Des Arc.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lamar hall; niece, Sue Dennis of Harrison, Arkansas and brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, LaNan Lisko and Vicki Horton both of Hazen; two granddaughters, Jamie Lisko Halijan of Carlisle and Janan Lisko Sickel (Mason) of Tollville; grandsons, Andy Lisko (Amy) of Slovak and David Horton (Kelly) of Birmingham, Alabama; great-grandchildren, Dara Kathleen Halijan, Cole Sheets, Drew Lisko, Maci and Isaac Sickel, Madison Sickel, and Beckett and Bauer Horton.

Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday,  August 16, 2014, at the Hazen Cemetery in Hazen, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, August 15 at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen.

Pallbearers will be Cole Sheets, Drew Lisko, Matt Perry, and Dale Perry.

Memorials may be made to the Hazen Library or the Hazen Cemetery.

Mack Williams

Mack Williams, 80, of De Valls Bluff, passed away on August 7, 2014 after a long 40 year battle with cancer.

He was born on January 14, 1934, in De Valls Bluff to Clarence and Bessie Brooks Williams.  Mack graduated from De Valls Bluff High School in 1952 and began working for the Army Corp of Engineers on a snag boat up and down the Mississippi river.

Except for 2 years living in Germany while serving in the Army, he lived his entire life in De Valls Bluff.  Upon returning from service in the Army, he went back to work on the river.  In 1970, he began working at Remington Arms in Lonoke and retired in December of 1993.

Mack is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Hall Williams; two sons, Vince (Michelle) Williams of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Russell (Shelly) Williams of DeWitt, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Caleb and McKenzie Williams of Jacksonville, N.C. and Erin Williams of DeWitt, Arkansas; one special niece, Haylee Chapman of De Valls Bluff and two sisters, Velda (Troy) Tacker of De Valls Bluff and Nancy Mason of Arizona.

Mack was a Christian and enjoyed attending church until failing health prevented it.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing and so proud of his large garden, the fruits of which he shared with friends.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Saturday at the Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Sunday, at Westbrook Funeral Home Chapel in Hazen.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in De Valls Bluff.

Jerry Robert Duch

Jerry Robert DuchJerry Duch, 85, of Hazen, AR, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday August 4, 2014.

Jerry was born in Slovak, AR to Julius and Mary Duch on November 15, 1928.  He served his country in the Army during the Korean War.  He spent his entire career working as a farmer.  He married the love of his life Linda on March 2, 1973.  He enjoyed the simple things in life such as spending time with family and friends, working in his garden and building model airplanes.  He was a member of St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Mary Duch; brothers Albin, Daniel, and Richard Duch; and sisters Bernadine Skarda and Lorraine Madar.

Jerry is survived by his wife Linda of Hazen; five children Alecia Ozimek of Gurnee, IL; Sharon Gault of Carlisle, AR; John Warren of Oceanside CA; Bill Warren and wife Kym of Carlisle, AR; Stephen Duch and wife Amber of Sherwood, AR; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and one brother Raymond Duch of Hazen, AR.

Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday August 7, 2014 at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen, AR, followed by a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday August 8, 2014 at St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak, AR.
